Whether you like blueberries or not, the annual Ketchikan Blueberry Arts Festival is an event you won’t want to miss. While there are a number of blueberry-focused events, you’ll also find art, sports, music and silly contests for a day of outdoor fun in Alaska.

The event takes place every year in the summer, with this being the festival’s 39th year. It will take place August 1-3, 2014. On August 1 the fun begins with a Blueberry Pet & Doll Parade where children can dress up their pets and dolls in fun costumes. Later in the day, a blueberry dish contest, art exhibit and dance festival continue the fun. On August 2, fun runs, artisan vendors, a battle of the bands, pie eating contest (no hands!) and an abundance of art displays can be enjoyed. On Sunday, the fun concludes with dancing and a true cultural treat, a fishing-focused poetry slam. Possibly the quirkiest happening of the weekend is the slug weigh-in and race, where real slugs compete for speed. There’s also a quirky beard contest — categories include Most Artistic, Wildman and People’s Choice — where the winner is awarded shaving cream and beauty products.

The overall festival is free, although certain events within might require tickets. Locations vary depending on the activity.

Looking for more Ketchikan experience? There is much to see and explore. On a 90-Minute Fjords National Monument Seaplane Tour you’ll take in aerial views of the breathtaking Misty Fjords National Monument, as well as glaciers, mountains, waterfalls and enormous mirror lakes. Also keep your eyes peeled for wildlife like humpback whales, brown bears and mountain goats. Another great excursion is the Alaskan Wilderness Off-Road Tour from Ketchikan, which takes you on a bumpy adventure in the driver’s seat of a Tomcar to traverse 14 miles (23 kilometers) of rough terrain and beautiful scenery. And on a Bering Sea Crab Fisherman’s Tour from Ketchikan, you’ll board the Aleutian Ballad, a commercial fishing boat featured on the Deadliest Catch, and watch the crew reel in crab, eel, octopus and other sea creatures, learning the ins and outs of professional fishing as well as the marine animals themselves.
